Giordano's André Chénier
Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, André Chénier dramatizes the turbulent clash between idealism and terror. The opera follows the real-life poet André Chénier, whose passionate support for justice and liberty places him at odds with the rapidly radicalizing revolution. As the ancien régime collapses and the Reign of Terror takes hold, personal convictions and romantic ideals are swept up in political extremism.
Giordano’s work captures the chaos, fervor, and tragic irony of a time when yesterday’s revolutionaries became today’s enemies — and when art, love, and humanity were often sacrificed at the altar of ideology.
In Vortex
The ballet evening 'In a Vortex' (Örvényben) was one of the standout contemporary dance productions of the Hungarian State Opera’s 2010 season. The programme comprises works by five different choreographers, all unified by common themes: human relationships, the dynamics between men and women, and the timeless questions of life and death, explored through the expressive language of modern dance.
The closing piece of the evening, 'In a Vortex' (Örvény), is choreographed by András Lukács to music by Philip Glass. Originally created as a pas de deux, the choreography was later expanded to include nine couples. Its spiral movements and circular formations evoke the swirling motion of water, alluding to the suicide of Virginia Woolf as portrayed in the film The Hours.
Through the harmony of music and movement, the piece delivers a powerful emotional experience, portraying the inner struggles of the human soul and the possibility of rebirth.
